There will be six Pre-Congress workshops taking place on Sunday 14 June 2015 and these will be held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Radiation Oncology Workshop

Time: 0900 - 1600

Speakers: Dr Sid Baxi, Margaret Hjorth, Marie Condon, Sharon Ray, Gabby Vigar, David Cutt, Sharon Maresse and Narelle Smith

Description: 

This one day workshop is aimed at nurses working in radiation oncology. Attending this workshop will give nurses a better understanding of new research in radiation oncology, ideas for nurse led interventions, address challenges with concurrent chemotherapy – radiation therapy patients and explore new technologies in this setting.

Description: 

This workshop will benefit nurses working in clinical areas caring for patients with cancer.  The workshop will focus on the prevention, detection and management of common infections in cancer patients undergoing treatment.  Attendees will gain insights into antibiotic spectrum, selection, duration, stewardship and nurse led management of patients with low risk febrile neutropaenia.

Expanding the Possibilities for Breast Cancer Care

Description: 

This symposium will highlight the historical role of breast cancer nursing and explore the future directions and opportunities for breast care nurses working within the Australian Health care system. This symposium will appeal to both novice and advanced practitioners covering topics such as breast cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment, rare breast cancer presentations and vulnerable patient groups.  Consumer perspectives will be incorporated into this symposium to enable exploration of the unmet needs of patients with breast cancer.

New Researchers Workshop

Aim: This workshop will assist nurses considering undertaking a quality improvement or small research project in their workplace to develop a research question and plan a small project. The workshop will be facilitated by Professor Jane Phillips and experienced researchers will be on hand to assist participants with developing their project plans.

Objectives:

  • To develop a research question, aims and objectives
  • To develop a strategy to search the literature in the proposed area
  • To determine an appropriate methodology for the project
  • To identify possible sources of funding
  • To consider project outcomes such as publications

  • To develop skills required for effective communication
  • Identify what does and doesn’t work for you in your communication
  • To develop new skills in communication and determining how to put them into practice.

  • New & Evolving technologies in Vascular Access. Pressure / Power Injection, Impregnated Catheters, Bung Technology, Antimicrobial technology with Catheters & Dressings, Ultrasound and ambulatory devices.
  • Discussion on current VA research and linking it to clinical practice, standards and accreditation.
  • Clinical workstations including Peripheral Cannulation, Port Access & De-access, securement & dressings, flushing and injection caps.

This workshop is suitable for any clinicians responsible for inserting, managing, researching or educating about Vascular Access Devices in the Cancer Care Setting.
